In view of the Ministry of Finance's agreement to sign financing terms with Chinese creditors, Ketraco of Kenya plans to begin constructing a high-voltage transmission project for Lamu coal-fired power stations in July.

Ketraco General Manager Fernandes Barasa said that this 520-kilometer 400-kV high-voltage transmission line will cost about 220 million U.S. dollars for 36 months.

The high-voltage transmission line is expected to connect the Lamu coal-fired power station with an installed capacity of 1,050 MW to the capital, Nairobi, through Kitui and other regions.

It is reported that the total investment of the Lamu coal-fired power station reaches US$2 billion and was initially planned to start construction in September 2015. However, due to long-term disputes such as environmental issues and compensation disputes, it was delayed.

Mr. Barasa said that as a state-owned power transmission system operator, Ketraco is advancing the construction of high voltage transmission lines to avoid huge economic losses caused by the delay of 310 MW Lake Turkana wind farm.
